What Is an Echocardiography Technician?

Echocardiography technicians are specially trained technicians who perform special tests called echocardiograms.  These are tests that use ultrasound equipment to visualize the valves and arteries of the heart to determine if a patient has cardiac damage or even a congenital defect that will need surgery or other intervention to correct.

The echocardiography technician works closely with the cardiologist and needs to have a good understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the heart as well as a good understanding of ultrasound technology.  He or she will take careful measurements for the radiologist to review and report to the heart doctor.

Echocardiography technicians generally work in the hospital setting but can also work in a specialist's office or a free-standing diagnostic clinic.

Most echocardiography technicians enjoy their job and enjoy helping people.
