Since 1947, visual arts school Antonelli College has retained the values of excellent instruction in visual arts and business, and assisted students in developing their abilities to be successful in the professional world. The College started out educating people on craftsmanship and honing art skills at the Gebhardt Art School in 1947. The College was renamed the Ohio Visual Art Institute in the mid seventies and then renamed Antonelli College in 1982. Business office technology degree programs were added during the 1990's and both health information technology and massage therapy were added in January, 2005. The long-standing tradition of offering high-quality career education was expanded in January of 1996, when branches in Jackson and Hattiesburg, Mississippi opened.

Occupational Associate of Applied Science Degree in Massage Therapy Cincinnati, Hattiesburg, and Jackson all have campuses offering the Massage Therapy.

Introduction

The profession of massage therapy is continually growing, along with the public's use of massage therapy, leading to growth in both quantity and quality. Eighteen percent of adult Americans report receiving a massage from a massage therapist within the previous year, compared to 8% in 1997. Massage therapists in the US range between 260,000 and 290,000, and that figure includes students. In comparison to1996, when there were only 120,000-160,000. Currently the American Massage Therapy Association has over 46,000 members, a fourfold increase since 1990.

Program Overview

The Associate of Applied Science Degree in Massage Therapy grooms individuals for ground-level jobs in the interesting and exciting massage therapy industry. With a degree you can practice your career in places as diverse as sports venues and private practices, health clubs and resort spas. To ready graduates for all aspects of a successful career including therapeutic massage techniques and ethical responsibility, the massage therapy program stresses personal development as well as communication skills. Once students successfully complete this program, they will be ready to take the state licensing examinations in massage therapy in either Ohio or Mississippi.

Career Outlook

Currently, a high percentage of individuals who become massage therapists do finish an education training program. You should find a program with a minimum or 500 “in-class” instruction hours as the field of massage therapy has grown complex and requires a fair amount of instruction. A well designed training program offers an advantage of a well-rounded and complete preparation for massage therapy. It is also important to remember that massage therapists are now regulated in 33 states and the District of Columbia with nearly all of these requiring a minimum of 500 hours of training from a state-recognized program. Therefore, at least 500 hours has become the minimum standard for entry level.

Massage therapists have the unique opportunity to practice in various settings, such as private offices or massage therapy clinics, chiropractors' or doctors' offices, holistic health clinics, health clubs and fitness centers, spas, nursing homes and hospitals, and even with sports teams and sports medicine facilities. Some massage therapists will travel to your home or office with their portable equipment. Massage therapists are gradually beginning to make appearances in storefronts, shopping malls and airports, all places allowing them to serve customers better.

Note:

A student that has successfully completed the Massage Therapy program will be allowed to sit for the National Massage Therapy Exam and possibly become licensed in the state of Mississippi.

Occupational Associate of Applied Business Degree in Business Office Technology - Medical Assisting

Medical assistants who graduate with an Occupational Associate of Applied Business Degree in Business Office Technology will be ready to work directly under or alongside a physician. With skills in administration you can look forward to working with scheduling, maintaining medical records, billing and coding for insurances claims. A variety of clinical you will perform as a Medical Assistant will include monitoring vital signs, prepping patients, drawing blood, or dispensing medication as instructed by the physician you will be working with.

Program Overview

The Associate Degree of Applied Business in Business Office Technology with an emphasis in Medical Assisting program is keyed toward providing students with the skills needed to work in conjunction with a physician.

Employment options include positions in the Medical Assistant at entry-level, pharmacy technician, a medical receptionist, a laboratory technician, processing insurance billing, phlebotomist, clinical aide, insurance claims agent, office manager, and other medical and clerical positions in the medical field. The training you receive in the areas of physical exams, EKG procedures, venipuncture, and urinalysis will be hands on and prepare you to work alongside physicians and other medical professionals. Among the skills you can expect to gain are word processing proficiency, pharmacology, public speaking skills, advanced computer knowledge, and detailed knowledge of medical office procedures.

Medical Assisting and positions in the medical industry are the most rapidly growing careers in the United States. Upon entry into a medical career, you will perform both administrative and clinical duties; these can be as basic as scheduling appointments or as advanced as conducting simple laboratory tests. The quick-paced environment in a physician's office, hospital, health clinic and/or nursing home makes it necessary for a Medical Assistant to be ready to accept the challenges of performing multi-tasks while providing a competent and caring atmosphere for your patients.

Occupational Associate of Applied Science Degree in Health Information Technology

Students achieve more in-depth knowledge of medical coding through intense, hands-on courses in addition to a medical coding externship. The financial aspects of the medical and health care provider is the one area where focus is shared. If the coders and billers are not reliable and efficient, healthcare providers cannot do good business.

Program Overview

The Applied Science Degree in Health Information Technology - Medical Coding program will prepare students for careers in the ever-changing medical records professions. Students will obtain a more detailed knowledge of medical coding with classes that offer a thorough hands-on approach and include a medical coding externship. Once the program has been completed, graduates will be equipped with the skills needed to gain employment as a professional coder in a variety of environments, including hospitals, doctors' offices, public health departments, and more.

Medical Coding Career Outlook

According to procedures that have already been set forth, medical coders take different information from medical records and assign appropriate ICD 9 CM and/or CPT codes to patient records. The medical coding program offers confirmation on appropriate DRG assignments including entry and manipulation of databases. Knowledge in CPT-4 and ICD-9 coding is required. Additional requirements are an associate degree and a minimum of two years of hands-on experience handling medical records using the following coding systems: International Classification of Disease and the Current Procedural Terminology. Familiarity with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within a medical specialty is also required. In order to plan well and succeed in one's goals, it is imperative to use the best of your judgement with the purpose of utilizing limited experience. Students will be able to omplete a variety of tasks and be able to work when supervised. A certain amount of freedom and imagination are necessary. Employees in this position usually serve under a manager or supervisor in a chain of command.

Occupational Associate of Applied Science in Dental Assisting

Dental Assistants perform duties similar to laboratory/offices duties, as well as patient care. They work right by the dental chair while dentists examine patients and treat their dental problems. As well as obtaining dental records and preparing for various treatments, the assistants see to the comfort of the patient in the chair. Some of the job tasks performed by assistants include handing instruments to the dentist and keeping the patients' mouth dry and clear. Assistants may also be required to disinfect/sterilize equipment, prepare instrument trays for surgery and educate patients on post surgery and every day oral health care.

Program Overview

The Associates Degree in Applied Science for Dental Assisting will be stellar in obtaining a career in the field. There are many different types of work available to a dental assistant such as: General and Children's dentistry, orthodontics and endodontics, to name just a few. Students are eligible to work in administrative offices as well as clinical settings with the help of administrative training. Degree students are enabled to enter the workforce with much advanced knowledge in their skills of the dental field because of the internship and computer classes that they receive. Graduates will have the benefit of choosing from a wide array of entry level positions.

Dental assistant jobs include a wide variety of tasks. A dental assistant is responsible for many duties that require excellent communications and clinical skills.

Regulations vary from state to state, however the duties of a dental assistant include, but are not limited to:

  • assisting the dentist during various treatment procedures
  • taking and developing dental radiographs (x-rays)
  • taking down a patient's medical history and vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, etc.)
  • acting as an infection control officer by developing infection control protocols and preparing and sterilizing dental instruments and equipment
  • making sure that patients are comfortable before, during and after dental treatments
  • relaying instructions for oral care to patients after surgery or dental treatment procedures (such as the placement of a restoration or filling)
  • educating patients on appropriate oral hygience practices in order to maintain oral health (tooth brushing, flossing and nutritional counseling)
  • making impressions, or models, of patients' teeth for study casts
  • using a computer to perform office management duties
  • communitcating with both patients and suppliers while scheduling appointments, answering telephones, billing and ordering supplies
  • assisting the dentist with providing care to patients in all dental specialties, including orthodontics, pediatric dentristy, periodontics and oral surgery
