Ultrasound Technician - Ultracool job

June 22, 2009

Of the hundreds of career choices in the health care field, few have the benefits and challenges associated with being an Ultrasound Technician (Medical Sonographer).  Ultrasounds are used in a huge variety of health care settings including doctor offices, emergency rooms, imaging centers and surgical suites.

Ultrasound imagery is a field that is far from stagnant.  Changes in the technology are occuring rapidly and as the technology advances, so will the demand for the technicians that can operate the ultrasound imaging equipment.

Here is what the Bureau of Labor Stastics has to say about the job outlook:

“Employment of diagnostic medical sonographers is expected to increase by about 19 percent through 2016—faster than the average for all occupations—as the population ages, increasing the demand for diagnostic imaging and therapeutic technology. Additional job growth is expected as sonography becomes an increasingly attractive alternative to radiologic procedures, as patients seek safer treatment methods. Unlike most diagnostic imaging methods, sonography does not involve radiation, so harmful side effects and complications from repeated use are less likely for both the patient and the sonographer. Sonographic technology is expected to evolve rapidly and to spawn many new sonography procedures, such as 3D- and 4D-sonography for use in obstetric and ophthalmologic diagnosis.”

Gerontology as a career

June 11, 2009

It’s no secret that the world’s population is aging.  As a large segment from the baby boomer generation ages, the need for compassionate, well trained care givers will only increase.

Taking care of geriatric patients requires special skills and honestly not everyone is cut out to do this kind of work.  Older patients have special needs that need tended.  Many have complicateed medical histories that can make giving day to day care a real challenge.  In addition to the medical history dillema, most elderly patients take a wide variety of medications that can complicate diagnosis and treatment of new problems.  In order to care properly for these folks, you need to  be able to multi-task.

If you are considering entry into this challenging but rewarding section of the health care industry, then you need to ask yourself these questions:

Do you have the ability to accomplish tasks taking all factors into consideration?

Are you a caring and compassionate individual?

Are you a patient person?

If you answer yes to these questions then this career may be for you.  Although it is challenging, the rewards can be tremendous.

In terms of a career choice, taking care of the elderly will continue to be something for which skilled care givers are required, well into the future.  Find out more by contacting one of our gerontology schools today.

How to succeed in on-line nursing classes

June 9, 2009

Online nursing classes are a great way to start or further your nursing career while studying and learning on your own time, even holding down a full-time job in the meantime. While online courses may cover the same material traditional classroom courses, as an online student, there are a few things you can do to help make sure you do your best and get the most out of your courses.

Here are three tips for how to succeed in online nursing classes:

1. Gather your resources.

One of the greatest advantages of taking online nursing classes is that you can have all of your important materials in one place and at your fingertips, i.e., on your computer. This is only an advantage, however, if you take the time to organize all the resources you may use over the course of the semester.

Along with any materials provided by your online school, some other online resources that you should might consider have readily available include:

¡P        Encyclopedia

¡P        Dictionary

¡P        Gray’s Anatomy of the Human Anatomy

¡P        Nursing Drug Handbook

¡P        Periodic Table of Elements

¡P        Taber’s Medical Dictionary

¡P        Thesaurus

¡P        Thomson Reuters Micromedex free PDA-based clinical tools

2. Study, study, study-everywhere.

Just because you’re taking classes online doesn’t mean that they’ll be easier than traditional courses; you will have to do a considerable amount of studying to remember all of the important information you’re learning, and many times you’ll be doing this studying on the go.

Since you undoubtedly have other commitments, a great way to be ready to study at any given free moment is to have flash cards ready to pull out. Especially useful in learning medical terminology, diseases, symptoms, and treatments, index cards are some of the most old-fashioned but effective study aids around. The most common method of making flash cards is to write a question or term on the front of the card and an answer or definition on the back.

Also, if you come across something that would be too long to write on index cards or that require more of an explanation, consider “tabbing” your study materials with colored index tabs to mark important information.

3. Get yourself organized.

Chances are if you’re taking online nursing classes, you are also holding down at least one job and taking care of other responsibilities as well. The best way manage all of that is to keep a tangible record of everything you need to do-from assignments, readings, and exams to your children’s doctors’ appointments.

Daily or weekly planners, whether virtual or actual, are great for quick looks at what you’ll need to accomplish; be sure to check it at the beginning of each week so you are sure to schedule enough time to complete all of the upcoming tasks.
