If you’ve made the decision to enhance your life and career by attending the perfect medical or nursing training then it’s going to be important that you prepare yourself and your family for the coming months. If you’re still on the fence then that’s ok too. This checklist will help you be fully prepared to make the most of your training when the time comes.
Whether you’re travelling cross country or cross town, taking a few moments to run through this checklist could save you from headache and hassle as you work towards your educational goals.
- Get your support system in place. Let all of your friends and family members know what you’ll be up to for the duration of your training. Ask them to help by being patient. Let them know that during this time, you will be focused on your studies, and that this will be the most important thing you have going on in your life. Remind them that if you are unable to attend social events and gatherings, it is only due to your educational priorities - it’s nothing personal.
- Make a list of all of the things that you need to accomplish prior to beginning the training. Work diligently to complete this list. When you take to time to de-clutter your life, you will be able to focus on your training.
- Take a close look at your finances. Develop a realistic budget and stick to it. Remind your family that these times of living “small” will be worth it when you’ve completed your training and are embarking on a well paid career.
- Sign up with your bank to pay as many bills as possible through online banking or bill pay services. You want to streamline as many mundane tasks as possible in order to focus on your education.
- Share the course schedule and syllabus with your family so that they have an idea about the level of commitment and work you’ve got ahead of you. When everyone understands what is involved, there are no surprises and it is easier for them to be a true support system for you.
- If possible, obtain a list of required texts and then spend some time online to research if any of the titles are available for purchase from discount text brokers.
- Don’t wait until the last minute before purchasing any supplies or equipment required for your training. If you wait until the last day, it’s possible the school bookstore may be out of the required items, which puts you at a disadvantage at the beginning of the course.
- If you have any questions about books, supplies, software or the course in general, contact the school immediately. This is especially important if you are going to be attending a training course far from home.
Attending any medical or nursing training requires a large degree of dedication to the coursework. It also requires a deep level of commitment from your support system as well. Give yourself every opportunity to succeed by following these steps and being completely prepared for your course of study.
