A great many people need to have some kind of financial assistance when they go back to school. The cost of training for a new career is simply more than most folks have in their savings account. For this reason, it’s important to know what kinds of options are available to you.
Your very first step in your research to find financial aid sources should be the completion of the FAFSA. The FAFSA is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. The form is not terribly complicated and can be completed online here. This is the starting point because much of the financial aid that is available comes from federal sources. Completing the FAFSA will let you know what types of financial aid are available to you.
Once you have completed your FAFSA, you want to contact the financial aid office of whichever school you are applying to. If they are local, schedule an appointment to come in and go over your options. If the school is not local, make a call and ask to speak to the financial aid officer. They are going to be able to let you know what kinds of programs are available to you. As well, they can point out specific scholarship programs as well as other financial aid options.
It’s very important that you not wait until the last minute to try and figure out your financial aid options. Most financial aid programs require the filing of the necessary paperwork in the spring prior to the fall semester start. It is never too early to begin the process. Delaying may affect your ability to start your schooling in a timely manner.
Remember, a student loan is something that needs to be paid back. It is not “free” money. For this reason, it’s important that you only borrow as much as you need. It is tempting to take more but you want to try and avoid finishing school and starting a new career with a huge student loan debt hanging over your head.
Financial aid is there for you. A lack of money is rarely an excuse anymore for not attending school. Do your research, start early and you will be well on the way to moving forward in your educational goals.
