Medical Assistant – Diploma

The MA is expected to be one of the most booming careers through 2014. Americans' life spans are longer than they have ever been which means they need more health care during their later years. In fact, the larger the country's population, the more people there are who need medical care.

Clinical Skills

The health care industry has experienced exponential growth, and students from the Career Centers of Texas will be equipped with the skills necessary to work in medical office environments; in fact, much of their training will come from actual training labs that will offer them hands-on experience with real medical equipment. You will be required to perform a variety of clinical procedures, including giving injections, drawing blood, taking vital signs, and assisting during minor surgeries.

Administrative Skills

Since computers are essential in modern medical office settings, this course focuses on word processing, computer-enhanced finance, and diverse techniques for recordkeeping.

The patient care technician assists patients with tasks they cannot do for themselves, such as bathing, brushing their teeth and hair, eating, and dressing. Other tasks may include, but are not limited to, helping patients move from one place to another, transferring patient to and from bed or a wheelchair, or performing range of motion exercises.

What Will You Study?

  • Home health with a focus on communication skills, observing, reporting and recording, and maintaining a safe home health care environment
  • Mental health services including topics like anxiety, patient safety, chemical dependency, and developmental disorders
  • Patient care assisting to obtain skills in taking vital signs, assisting surgical, pediatric, and obstetrics patients, and learning to cope with death and dying
  • Specialized care procedures such as caring for wounds and changing dressings, performing respiratory care procedures, collecting specimens, and performing lab tests, phlebotomy, and electrocardiography

Gain Real-World Experience

Before graduating from the program, you will be required to participate in an externship at a health care facility in the community. This externship experience will prepare you for an entry-level position as a patient care assistant/technician (PCAT), health care technician, nursing or home health aide, phlebotomist, electrocardiograph aide, or allied health assistant. Pharmacy Technicians are required to assist a licensed/ registered pharmacist. Depending on the rules and regulations of their state, their duties may include counting pills and putting labels on bottles. The Department of Labor expects accelerated growth in all occupations through 2014.

Career Responsibilites

Your expected duties as a pharmacy technician, working under the supervision of a registered pharmacist, include but may not be limited to: transcribing doctors' orders, obtaining refill authorizations, and processing insurance claims. Among the additional activities during the day are premium management and safety acts, upkeep of patient files in a computerized system, and checking, stocking or reordering inventory items.

A Career-Focused Curriculum

Your ability to be successful as a pharmacy technician will be enhanced through our curriculum, which includes lectures, lab training, and an externship. The training provided will cover basic pharmacy procedures and includes courses in several detailed applications that will be needed to be knowledgeable in the field.

You will study courses that focus on:

Career Centers of Texas has four main areas of study, and some of the programs have multiple areas of focus which enable students to learn targeted skills to begin new professions. The Allied Health program, for example, consists of a Dental Assistant diploma program, a Medical Practice Management Associate's degree program, a Pharmacy Technician diploma program, and other health-related disciplines. This level of focus provides students with the targeted skills that they need to excel in their chosen fields. Not all programs are available at all campuses.

Students will learn about office procedures, computer software skills, or whatever skills are specific to their career of choice. Dental Assistant: Diploma

At Career Centers of Texas, you can receive education and practical training necessary to begin your profession in the field of dental assisting.

Clinical Skills Training

In our dental assistant course, your training will emphasize on a range of clinical procedures you may conduct on the job as you help the dentist along side during dental activities, like:

  • Helping with oral surgery, oral evacuation, and other procedures
  • Coronal polishing, fluoride, and putting on pit and fissure sealants
  • Giving instruments and materials to the dentist
  • Knowing structures of the oral cavity, the different kinds of teeth, and universal codes for each and every tooth
  • Teaching patients about preventative and post-operation dental care
  • Sterilizing and disinfecting dental instruments and equipment and other important infection control steps
  • Conducting dental radiographs (if having a valid certification) and impressions of patients' teeth

Administrative Skills Training

A majority of dental assistants also have to discharge administrative duties to assist in ensuring an efficient, commercially successful dental clinic. Prepare for Certification

The dental assistant program is specifically developed to assist you to make the right preparations for the radiology certification examinations recognized by the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners (TSBDE), which may also carry certification to conduct specific radiologic procedures.† Regulations differ from state to state. To be qualified to take x-rays in a dentist's office in the state of Texas, you are required to complete a mandatory short course which has been approved by the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners and also to be registered with the TSBDE.
