Dental Assistant

Dental Assistants are highly trained individuals who pay attention to even the smallest details. Their desire to serve in health care is so intense that they want to help other people even voluntarily.

The Dental Assistant is usually a clean, tidy organized individual who enjoys working with their hands.

Dental Assistants perform a number of duties including lab work and patient care. They are required to make patients at ease and comfortable, getting them ready for treatment by the dentist, and keeping track of dental records. Typical responsibilities of the dental assistant in an exam include providing the dentist with instruments and materials, and keeping a patient's mouth clean through suction and other dentistry tools.

Their work involves sterilizing the instruments and equipment, preparing the tray setup for dental procedures, and instructing the patients on post operative and general oral health. Some dental students also get the materials for making impressions and restorations ready and expose radiographs and process dental x-ray film.

From placing rubber dams on the teeth to isolate them for individual treatment, to removing sutures, applying anesthetics to gums or cavity-preventive agents to teeth, along with removing excess cement used in the filling process are some of the procedures dental assistants may perform.

Assistants with lab duties will make casts of teeth and mouths, clean and polish appliances and also make temporary crowns. Dental Assistants may also be required to perform office duties such as: confirm appointments, receive patients, keep records, send/receive payments and order supplies.
