Dental Assistant

Program of Study Leading to a Diploma

The Dental Assistant diploma curriculum helps pupils become prepared to be an entry-level dental assistant, ready to support the dentist who is working with patients. The program gives students experience to work in the operatory or treatment room with a dentist. As a dental assistant you will mix and prepare materials for restoration and impressions, evacuate all materials from the oral cavity, also you will prepare the the instrument tray and anesthersia set-ups as ordered by the dentist. Duties of the chairside dental assistant include exposing, developing, and mounting dental x-ray pictures (radiographs). The chairside assistant may sterilize the dental instruments and get cases ready to send to the outside dental lab. There are government rules stating specifically how to deal with infection control and sterilizing equipment. Students in this program are prepared in various administrative and clerical procedures that are required, such as word processing, managing files and records, scheduling appointments and handling other front office duties.

The program is split into six five-week long sections (evening sections run for ten weeks), ending with a ten week externship in a dental office or facility.

Graduates will be prepared to assist the dentist chairside upon completing this program. The program prepares the students for many different situations and job requirements that will occur on the job. American Career College provides all graduates from its Dental Assisting program the best training and know-how available to arm them to enter the work force. Those who graduate from the program will be ready to take the Dental Assisting National Board's Certified Dental Assistant examination.
