Dental Office Assistant Training

Dental office assistants manage and oversee daily administrative duties for a dental practice. Job duties range from receiving and updating patient's records and treatment notes to sending bills and tracking payments. Many dental office assistants also order dental supplies and materials. In some cases, this position involves making casts and molds of a patient's mouth or teeth, cleaning and polishing certain dental appliances, informing patients of best practices in good oral hygiene, and scheduling future appointments.

Average Pay

The median hourly pay for a dental office assistant in 2006 was $14.53. This can increase or decrease depending upon many factors. Location, size of practice, and training can have an enormous impact on pay. The lowest 10% were paid less than $9.87 per hour, while the highest 10% were paid $20.69 per hour.

Many dental office assistants learn skills on the job, but an increasing number are attending an accredited dental assistant school. Most practices require on the job training as well as completion of a program from an accredited school. The American Dental Association approved 239 dental assisting programs in 2006. Most of these programs can be competed in less than a year; however, an associate degree is also available.
