Pharmacy Technician

A significant role is being played by Pharmacy Technicians who offer essential health care services among their community circle. Pharmacy Technician's duties include calculations and measuring and mixing the required amounts and substances together to form the correct compound. Pharmacists are helped by assistants to place orders, pack and label pharmaceutical products and enable them to maintain prescription records including inventories of products related to health and pharmacy. Working with a registered pharmacist will give you confidence and teach you how to deal with everyday situations that may occur. Pharmacy technicians can work virtually in any pharmacy setting once they have graduated. Government health departments,as well as insurance and pharmaceutical companies also employ Pharmacy Technicians. Pharmacy Technician, Pharmacy Technical Assistant and Pharmacy Aide are among the jobs that are available.

Pharmacy Technician: Diploma

Requirements for the one-year Pharmacy Technician Diploma include a two-month practical placement which provides 200 hours of work experience.

When you graduate, you will be well prepared for a variety of positions.

After graduation, you will have the skills for an entry-level position in home or pharmacy environments, as well as with pharmaceutical companies.

Pharmacy Technical Assistance: Diploma of Professional Studies (D.E.P)

The objective of the program is to equip students with the required skills and educational knowledge for start up positions in community, institutional pharmacies and long term care establishments.

There are 1230 hours of this program, to be sure you are fully prepared for the future. Areas of study include but are not limited to: Processing prescriptions, Parenteral/non perenteral drugs, calculating, computer software applications, sterilization, aseptic techniques, inventory, keeping accurate/precise/confidential records, billing, keeping within the law and communications. Three internships are included, one 3 week hospital setting, one 3 week in a community pharmacy, and a 2 week in a long-term care setting.

The students that complete the program successfully will receive a Diploma of Professional Studies.

What professions will Herzing train me for?

The career path prepares graduates to work on an interdependent team in a health care environment. Upon completion, graduates will have a multitude of employment opportunities in such areas as community pharmacies, institutional pharmacies. They may also find opportunities in mail order pharmacies, home care, patient education and a range of other positions within pharmaceutical companies.

Opportunities exist in the form of potential entry level employment which is expected to be available in direct practice settings consisting of community related pharmacies, hospitals and other facilities associated with health care. There are many other positions this career may lead to, such as in a direct practice, computer software sales/support and organizations that deal with direct billing.

Surgical Technology (ASST)

When assisting in surgical operations, Surgical technologists are supervised by surgeons, registered nurses or other surgical personnel. Surgical technologists hold pivotal roles in operating room teams, which can also include surgeons, nurses, and anesthesiologists. Preparing the operating room by setting up instruments and equipment, sterile drapes and sterile solutions is something that surgical technologists do to help before an operation. They adjust and check the working condition of sterile and nonsterile equipment after assembling it. Technologists also wash, shave, and disinfect incision sites of surgical patients preoperatively. They are responsible for getting the patients into the operating room, positioning them on the table, and putting sterile surgical drapes on them. Technologists also are expected to maintain vigil over the patient's vital signs and check charts on a consistent basis.

Medical Billing and Insurance Coding (DMBIC)

The program prepares and delivers students directly into entry-level positions as trained medical coders in a hospital, clinic or other health care facility setting. This program educates and enlightens students, equipping them with knowledge and understanding enabling them to analyze medical records in such a way so as to assign codes to classify diagnoses and procedures while at the same time, equipping them to apply the principles of professional and ethical conduct. Students completing the program will be qualified to seek employment in entry-level positions as medical coders in such settings as clinics, hospitals, or other health care facilities.

The experts who secure, analyze, integrate and manage information that drive the health care industry are the Medical Bill and Insurance Coding Specialists. This work is necessary to maintain the highest level of care that each patient deserves. Medical coders taking up coding as a career, are able to accomplish tasks in association with health care teams consisting of physicians, nurses, and other professionals who are considered to be the authority on medical data. Every diagnosis has a code for it which is applied by the coder in the patients records. Insurance and government agencies then utilize these codes in order to appropriately pay for the patient’s medical expenses. • Associate of Science in Medical Billing and Insurance Coding: 65 Credits
• Bachelor of Science in Health Information Management: 124 Credits

Health Care (ASHC)

Students in this program will learn basic skills necessary to begin a career in various health care professions. The core courses of concentration come from the Herzing University health care diploma program. In order to fulfill the requirements of their degree, students must complete all of the requirements of one of the following programs:

• Therapeutic Message - education in anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, hydrotherapy, massage theory and practice
• Medical Billing and Insurance Coding - education in terminology and analyzing medical records

At least 42 semester credit hours must be completed in the required courses in order to obtain a diploma in one of these health care programs: Medical Assisting, Medical Billing and Insurance Coding, Medical Office Administration, or Therapeutic Massage. Under the health care degree program, any deficit of credit hours for a diploma consisting of less than 42 semester credit hours of required courses can be substituted with technical courses elsewhere or from electives in the general education listings.

Dental Assisting (AASDA)

Dental Assistants have a number of different responsibilities, including patient care, office work, and performing laboratory procedures. They work alongside dentists, assisting while the dentist examines and treats the patients. They prepare patients for procedures, deal with medical records, and keep the patients relaxed and comfortable. In addition to maintaining a dry working area inside of a patient's mouth through suction equipment, assistants can be responsible for giving instruments and materials to the dentist. Assistants are also responsible to keep instruments and equipment sterilized and disinfected, set up trays for dental procedures, and to give patients instructions on postoperative and general oral health care. Preparing materials for making impressions and restorations, exposing radiographs, and processing dental X-ray film are also duties performed by some dental assistants.

The average time for an individual with a full class load is 4.5 semesters. At least 67 semester credit hours are required for graduation.
