What is Health Informatics?

Health Informatics (HI) is an umbrella term for the scientific field of healthcare that includes storing, retrieving, and using medical information., which is used to make decision about patient care.  This field touches on biomedical science and is closely tied to health information technologies.

As the demand for quality healthcare grows, so does the demand for HI, where information science, computer science, and health care all come together to optimize the way information is used in health care. In addition to using computers, it incorporates clinical guidelines, medical terminology, and information systems in order to provide physicians with teh most detailed information possible when making desicions about patient care. 

Career Options

HI is not a singular, specified job, but is incorporated into a wide variety of careers which combine data analysis with medical knowledge. Some of these positions include:

  • A Nursing Informatics Specialist supports patients and staff members by working with technicians to provide effective, detailed clinical information on patient care, and help to find solutions to specific problems.
  • an Information Security Officer protects the information that is available in the medical facility by ensuring files are not damaged, misused, or accessed without proper authorization.
  • An Informatics Research Assistant assists the research team of a health-care facility by collecting data, analyzing information, and completing various projects, such as interviewing volunteers to gain information.
  • A Clinical Informaticist is commonly a member of a medical management team who provides accurate information in data analysis, providing employees with adequate data needed for particular projects or meetings.
  • A Chief Information Officer provides the information technology department with expertise and guidance, overseeing the needs of the whole facility and giving the advice needed for efficient information technology.
