A Career in Health Information Management

With rapid developments in information technology and the ever-increasing healthcare needs of an aging population, the demand for Health Information Management (HIM) is skyrocketing. These professionals are required to keep patient records and databases organized and updated, thereby playing a large role in improving the quality and efficiency of patient care.

Job Responsibilities

  • Designing and managing the systems used to store and access information in the healthcare system.
  • Creating and processing records reports for patients receiving  treatment.
  • Setting up and monitoring important databases and information systems relating to disease and surgical procedures.
  • Understanding and implementing the security laws protecting patients' personal medical information and determining the appropriate procedures handling this private information.

Requirements for Becoming an HIM

You can become qualified to work as a HIM by completeing a 1 to 2 year associate's degree or a 1 year Post-Bac certification program. The prerequisites for these courses differ from school to school, so some research is necessary. For example, you may be required to have a high school diploma, even if you already attend a 4-year baccalaureate college. This industry is especially looking for individuals who enjoy working as part of a team, but also have the confidence to work without supervision and implement their own projects.

Benefits of a Career in Health Information Management

  • A wealth of employment opportunity in a fast-growing field. This can be in private practices, hospitals, clinics, IT companies, federal facilites, or health insurance companies.
  • A diverse and challenging role that combines three different areas of expertise: computer technology, accounting, and health care.
  • Job skills that are transferable to any working environment in any country.
