Guide to Healthcare Management Jobs

Healthcare industries are revolutionizing the way they operate, meaning they need more and more talented healthcare management professionals who will be able  adapt to these changes, working to improve the level of care they provide to their communities. Here's what this means for YOU.

1. Increasing Career Opportunities

Recent industry changes mean greater demand  for healthcare providers and a higher number of executive-level jobs in:

  • Hospitals
  • Private physician offices
  • Nursing homes
  • Extended care facilities
  • Consulting firms
  • Health insurance companies
  • Mental health organizations
  • Health departments
  • Research universities
  • Rehabilitation centers
  • Urgent care centers
  • Skilled nursing facilities

There are currently about 100,000 people in healthcare management jobs at all levels, and over half of these are at the level of CEO's, presidents or vice preisdents, while entry-level positions are often in specialized areas such as those in human resources or finance. Although this is a highly demanding career, knowing you are helping to improve the healthcare industry makes it rewarding.

2. Education and Training Requirements

To work as a manager in the healthcare field you will need to be familiar with management principles and practices. There are many ways to do this:

  • For most general healthcare management jobs: Master's degree in health services administration, long-term care administration, public health, business administration, health sciences or public administration.
  • For entry-level positions: Bachelor's degree
  • For smaller doctor's offices: On-the-job training

There are thousands of schools an colleges where you can earn a bachelor's or master's degree, including online. However, the program MUST be accredited, otherwise your degree is worth nothing. Even if you aquire an entry-level job with little or no training, in order to advance your career you may be required to extend your education.

IMPORTANT: In every state of the US, you will be required to get licensed if you are pursuing a career as a nursing care facility administrator, by passing an exam after completing a state-approved training program. Make sure you know your state's requirements!

3. Advancement opportunities

As a qualified healthcare manager, you can gain responsibility and increase your salary by moving into positions such as department head, administrator, chief executive officer, or even by moving to a larger facility.

There are a number of different areas to pursue a career in healthcare as a manager, and this is only expected to grow. Research the different opportunities  to find the right career path for you.
