Medical Insurance and Coding: Diploma Program

The Medical Coding and Insurance Program gives training in the knowledge and skills that will help you become eleigible for beginning positions in private clinics, physician offices, hospital clerical departments, or other medical centers.

The responsibilities of a medical coder typically involve maintenance of the records of medical and surgical procedures, observations, and treatment outcomes of patients. The records contain patients data that provide details about their symptoms and medical histories, treatment plans, results of examinations, reports of X-rays and laboratory tests, and diagnoses. Medical coders must learn to organize, prepare, and evaluate patient records looking for accuracy and completeness. Some medical coders might specialize in coding patients' medical information for the specific purpose of billing or insurance.

The tasks of a medical coder can change with size of the facility where they are employed. Coders in certain medical facilities, for example, may gain specialization in one area related to health information whereas they may be specialized in other situations that may include a wide range of duties also.

You can complete the requirements of the Medical Insurance and Coding Program as quickly as eight or nine months. Students completing the Medical Insurance and Coding Program will receive a diploma and will have developed the basic knowledge and skills necessary to begin a career as a medical coder.
