There are many diagnosis-related groups (DRG) which medical records technician may use to classify patients according to their diagnosis. By assigning specific codes to each diagnosis or medical procedures, the medical records technician is able to determine how much the clinic or the hospital should be reimbursed by companies using the DRG systems such as Medicare. Long-term healthcare and emergency services have their own coding system.
Computer systems allow technicians to retrieve large amounts of data to provide patient care, research, and information in the case of lawsuits. The responsibility of a medical records technician is largely dependent on the institution where they work. For example, small medical facilities hire experienced technicians to supervise the whole records department.
