Medical Records Technician Training

Medical records technicians are always needed to record the vast amount of information collected for each patient's medical history. Technicians keep these all patients' charts up-to-date within a practice or hospital by ensuring all forms are complete and properly identified, and that all necessary authentications have been added or updated for physicians and other healthcare professionals. In addition to organizing patients' physical charts, medical records technicians also add this information to an electronic database.

Is a Career as a Medical Records Technician Right for Me?

Keeping detailed and accurate patient records is an important aspect in the healthcare industry. The task of a medical records technician is to manage the database and conduct quality assurance measures to ensure the validity of these records, which include: read more [+]

  • Diagnoses
  • Treatment plans
  • Patient medical history
  • Test results
  • Descriptions of symptoms

Medical records technicians are responsible for managing the patient's records from the beginning until the end of their treatment. They need to ask patients to fill out appropriate forms and ensure that these are properly signed. In addition, they need to communicate with physicians and other healthcare practitioners in a consistent basis to make sure that all information recorded is complete.

There are many diagnosis-related groups (DRG) which medical records technician uses to classify patients according to their diagnosis. By assigning specific codes to each diagnosis or medical procedures, the medical records technician is able to determine how much the clinic or the hospital should be reimbursed by companies using the DRG systems such as Medicare. Long-term healthcare and emergency services have their own coding system.

Computer systems allow technicians to retrieve large amounts of data to provide patient care, research, and information in the case of lawsuits. The responsibility of a medical records technician is largely dependent on the institution where they work. For example, small medical facilities hire experienced technicians to supervise the whole records department. Meanwhile, large facilities often have technicians that specialize in a specific area.

Qualifications

Most medical records technicians have an associate's degree and have taken courses in database administration, anatomy, medical terminology, statistics, legal and ethical issues, abstraction, data encoding, and quality assurance techniques among others. Most institutions prefer applications with some background in life sciences and computer courses.

Promotion opportunities usually come after a technician has three years of experience in this field. Completing additional training programs will also help in career advancements. Technicians also have the option to take written examinations offered by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) if they have an associate degree from a Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Program (CAAHEP) accredited school.

Job Opportunities

Job growth in this field is expected to be better than average because of the increasing number of procedures and tests performed in the medical industry. In addition, insurance companies, law firms, and patients are now increasingly scrutinizing health-related records.

Doctor's offices are projected to employ a significant number of medical records technician in the next few years. Hospital employment will not grow as quickly, and growth is expected to remain relatively stable. Outpatient clinics, nursing homes, and home healthcare companies may also employ an increasing number of medical records technicians because of the demand for well-kept and accurate patient records. Aside from job growth, replacement requirements will provide job openings for new medical records technicians. Earning opportunity is this sector range from $19,550 to $30,600 with the median earning around $23,890.
