Medical Office Administration

What Is a Medical Administrative Assistant?

A medical administrative assistant may help to keep the office of a medical practice running efficiently and smoothly. They may work for dentists, chiropractors, physicians, or other types of health care professionals. In larger offices they may report to an office manager, or directly to the medical professionals who work at the office.

What does a medical administrative assistant do?

  • Find and update medical records
  • Complete insurance forms
  • Arrange additional services for patients
  • Answer phones
  • Schedule appointments
  • Handle billing and accounts receivable

Some offices are willing to train a medical administrative assistant on the job, however many may prefer that the applicant complete a one - or two-year medical administrative assistant associate’s degree. These degrees may teach medical terminology, computer skills, and other important areas of the job.
