Ekg Technician Certification Program

Echocardiography technicians specialize in performing non-invasive tests on patients' hearts. In many cases, an echocardiography technician will use a Doppler ultrasound machine to view various areas of a patient's body. The technician will then review these images and determine which parts of the body are healthy and which need to be further examined by physicians for analysis and diagnosis.

How to Become an Echocardiography Technician

Careers in the healthcare industry are some of the most stable jobs in our nation - and some of the most in-demand . read more [+]

An echocardiography technician is trained to use ultrasound equipment to observe and take photographs of the heart, and its corresponding veins and arteries. Their job allows them to work with doctors and assist in diagnosing heart attacks, blockages, and heart defects. This job also has a variety of settings such as in a hospital, doctor's office, or even in the military.

Education

The first step to becoming an echocardiography technician is to earn a degree in cardiovascular technology. This course is offered in most colleges and universities.

However, the student will need to ensure that the program is accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Cardiovascular Technology. If the program is not accredited through the committee, they will not be able to sit for the registry exam post-graduation.

A degree in cardiovascular technology takes approximately two years to complete and consists of several parts including:

These courses will help develop necessary skills in the field and will also help increase the student's medical knowledge. A student may also wish to take a course in computers as well as typing if you are not very familiar with those topics.

Work Experience

The next step is to work as an echocardiography technician to gain experience in the field. Most hospitals will offer training in order to complete the tasks needed for the particular duties a person will complete throughout their work day. This will add to the education that they will need to become a registered echocardiography technician.

They may choose to work during your courses or wait until they have finished all classes and have received their degree. According to most people that have pursued this career, it was easier to work part-time while completing their degree. Once the student has completed their work experience as an echocardiography technician and has received their degree in cardiovascular technology, the next step is to sit for the registry exam.

Registry Exam

This exam is considered the final step in the long two-year journey of becoming an echocardiography technician. Once the student passes this exam, they will be listed in the national database authorizing that they have completed all of the steps needed to be viewed as a highly-educated echocardiography technician. Keep in mind that in some locations, a person cannot work without being listed on the national registry.

Becoming an echocardiography technician can be a lengthy but rewarding process, as EKG technicians are able to help diagnose a heart attack before it happens, or save an infant child from a fatal heart disease.
