Job Prospects for Emergency Medical Technicians

There are excellent job prospects for emergency medical technician (EMT), most of which are available at private ambulance services, as well as hospitals and fire departments. As in many other medical fields, job vacancies will continue to open up because of a large population of aging baby boomers who may be in need of healthcare.

Emergency medical care has to be available around the clock; EMTs often work odd hours and have to be on-call for long periods of time. Availability may be required at a moment's notice. It is not unusual for EMTs to work more than forty hours a week.

Levels of EMTs

There are four EMT levels, and all 50states require certification for each level. Continuing education courses are required to maintain certification.

  • EMT-Basics, also known as EMT-1s, are entry-level emergency medical technicians
  • EMT-Intermediate requires hours of additional training, which varies from state to state. This level is divided into EMT-2s and EMT-3s.
  • The highest level is EMT-4, more commonly known as a paramedic.

EMTs in High Demand

Because of the need for trained medical personnel around the clock, job prospects are good for EMTs at all levels, especially in large cities. The more training and experience an EMT has, the better the job prospects.

Many job openings arise because of the need to replace workers who have left. Some EMTs leave the field because of having a hard time working long hours and because of the physical and emotional stress involved. Many EMTs use this job as a way to test their interest in healthcare. They may decide to purse further education and become nurses, doctors, physicians assistants, or physical therapists. Paramedics are sometimes promoted to supervisory positions. EMTs and paramedics sometimes become dispatchers or instructors.

Different Work Environments

Private ambulance services offer the best job prospects for emergency medical technicians. Opportunities are also available working for the government in fire departments or public ambulance services, but there is a lot of competition for government jobs because of attractive pay and benefits packages. Some EMTs are employed by hospitals to work in the hospital's emergency department. They may be dispatched to respond to calls where critical care is needed, such as becoming part of a crew in a medical helicopter.

EMT-Intermediates and paramedics have the best job prospects because patients are expecting the best care available. Salary and opportunity depend on geographic location as well as training and experience.
