Respiratory Therapy Schools
Breathe deeply, and learn about being a respiratory therapist. In this position, you will work directly with patients to evaluate and analyze their breathing patterns. You may also work alongside a physician to treat and care for patients with other cardiopulmonary disorders. Respiratory therapists are also largely responsible for a patient's diagnostic procedures and treatments. There is also the opportunity for interaction with other health care staff in planning, modifying, and maintaining a patient's daily health care regimen.

Preparing for Respiratory Therapy School
Respiratory therapists help treat people with various types of lung conditions such as asthma, emphysema, and cystic fibrosis. Under the orders of a doctor, therapists administer medication, oxygen and other types of breathing treatments. To become a respiratory therapist an individual needs to graduate from an accredited respiratory therapy program. Most programs are two years in length to earn an associate's degree. For those who are considering enrolling in respiratory school there are several steps to take to prepare.
- Start in High School
All respiratory therapy programs will include classes in pharmacology, anatomy, and microbiology, so to gain a strong foundation in these areas high school students should takeclasses such as chemistry, biology, and physics, and also algebra. Many courses will have certain prerequisites for admission, which often include a basic understanding of science. If you have finished high school, don't worry! Some schools allow students to take science courses alongside their respiratory therapy program.
- Get Immunized!
During your training you will come into contact with a whole host of contagious or dangerous illnesses. Therefore, all schools require students to have their immunizations up-to-date. Contact your chosen respiratory school to find out their specific requirements.
- Get Trained in CPR
Many programs will require you to be certified in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). These certification classes are offered by the American Red Cross and the American Heart Association or by community colleges, and typically take about 4-6 hours.
- Volunteer in a Hospital
As well as giving you a good idea of the type of environment you may be working in, volunteering in a hospital will be a great boost to your application. It is important to make sure you will be able to deal with traumatic or stressful situations before embarking on a career in respiatory therapy. Contact your local hospital's volunteer department to ask about requirements and volunteer positions.
- Shadow a Therapist
Seeing first hand what the career and typical day of a respiratory therapist is like may help you decide whether respiratory therapy school is right for you.You will gain a good understanding of the job responsibilites, and will be able to ask the respiratory therapist you shadow about his or her career experiences.
