Diagnostic Medical Ultrasound Program

At Sanford-Brown Institute-Garden City (SBI) the Diagnostic Medical Ultrasound program prepares students to perform diagnostic ultrasound examinations required of an entry-level general sonographerto include, among others, the abdomen, pelvis, pregnant female pelvis, and superficial structures. Vascular ultrasound is also introduced to students. The course participant will get a chance to learn the anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology of scanned organ systems, know and get familiar with the sonographic patterns pertaining to the organs, study the protocols for a logical and in-depth observation of the organs, and give correct and technical reports to the doctor doing the diagnosis. The main syllabus includes a lecture module, an imaging laboratory module, and a clinical module. Supervised experiences are included in the final externship that require competencies, logs and evaluations completed by the student. At the end of the course, participants who have regularly attended class and their externship and learned and honed their skills should have the necessary expertise to qualify for entry-level job in the capacity of a diagnostic medical sonographer.

There is no accreditation by the Commission for Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) for the SBI program in Diagnostic Medical Ultrasound. Successful students of the Diagnostic Medical Ultrasound course are advised to appear for the Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) test conducted by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS). Although this exam is not mandatory, it does help your employment prospects if you have this credential. After acquiring the necessary experience as defined by the ARDMS after graduation, graduates of SBI's Diagnostic Medical Ultrasound program are eligible for the RDMS exam. Outside agencies oversee the conditions for administering and passing the examinations and thus the exams are subject to change at any time as dictated by the agency. For this reason, SBI is not in a position to assure that graduates will be qualified to appear for certification tests at any time or at a certain time, irrespective of their qualification status after enrollment.
