X-ray tech schools in California prepare students to work alongside a radiologist or physician to examine patients who require X-rays, CT scans, MRIs, and various other radiology exams. The most common degree offered in the X-ray tech program is the two-year associate’s degree. During the program students are required to take courses that may include such topics as human anatomy, physiology, pathology, clinical practices, patient care assessment, radiology protection, radiographic exposure, radiographic imaging, and radiographic positioning. Prior to graduation, most programs in California require students to spend a total of 40 hours in a hospital radiology department performing an internship.

An X-ray technician can remain in X-ray picture taking, or further their career by going into one or more other careers within radiology.

Adaptable to Other Fields


If down the road X-ray becomes boring, one can easily change career paths and become a mammography technician. There are guidelines and steps that need to be adhere to, but the process isn't long or tedious. An extra continuing education course and a certain amount of hours working in mammography are necessary to be certified in mammography.

Bone Density

Most X-ray technicians will also perform bone density scans on patients. Again, once trained in X-rays, there is minimal additional training to perform bone density scans, which can typically be done in most imaging centers. At this time, there is no certification necessary.

CT or MRI Scans

Another career path that some X-ray technologists end up taking is to go into CT-scan, or MRI. Some imaging centers will provide additional training to any certified X-ray technician. It's usually investing hours of on-the-job training that will ensure the proper knowledge to move into MRI or CT-scan.

IT Specialists

Since X-ray has gone digital, information technologists (IT specialists) are in radiology are seeing new requirements, that they have gone to X-ray school and have had some sort of experience in X-ray. It's very important that they are able to read an image or at least know if it is clear enough for the doctors or not. Information technology or PACS administration is another path that may be started as an X-ray technician. Many companies or centers are making it mandatory that a PACS Administrator has experience in being an X-ray technician. Computer certification and experience is also required in this field.

Even though there are many paths you can take in a career of radiology, many start and stay in X-ray for the remainder of their careers. Others continue in X-ray, but further their careers by going into managerial positions within radiology.

With so many options in radiology, studying to become an X-ray technician is the best way to start.
