Nursing: Associate of Applied Science
The associates degree program in Nursing provides students with principles and knowledge from general education. When it comes to a professional practice, nurses are utilizing the knowledge that formed for better practice. Our program incorporates theory into clinical practice to provide students a well-rounded professional nursing education.
Working in hospitals, long-term care facilities, home health and a large variety of other healthcare areas, is what graduates are preparing for in their coursework. Treating patients, recording patients' medical histories and symptoms, and analyzing and performing diagnostic tests are the duties that nurses perform.
One hundred and nine (109) credit hours of study are included in this program, with courses covering topics such as:
- The development and theoretical basis for selected nursing skills and the student ability to perform those skills.
- Complex conditions in fields like: critical care, surgery, and emergency room.
- Major organizational and professional trends, as well as, political, social, economic, educational, legal and ethical issues affecting today's nurses.
Practical Nursing Diploma
This diploma program of Practical Nursing has clinical experience and class instruction in the subjects of medical-surgical nursing, pediatrics, geriatrics, obstetrics and pharmacology. The diploma program in Practical Nursing combines actual clinical experience with classroom instruction in many areas including medical-surgical nursing.
The graduate is prepared for an entry-level nursing position in a hospital, upon completion of this program. Some of the tasks that they must complete include taking vital signs, distributing medications, gathering samples for testing, and providing other general care.
Seventy-six credit hours of study are required to complete the program. Students take courses in:
- Human anatomy and physiology.
- Laboratory and instruction practice with principles of administering medications, and the development of very important thinking skills, as well as dosage calculations.
- The treatment of a variety of health problems, focusing on the practical nurse's role in caring for patients as a member of the healthcare team.
Practical Nursing Certificate
The Practical Nursing Certificate program provides students with the principles and knowledge of behavioral and biological sciences. Completion will cover all aspects of working in a private or hospital setting. The integration of theory with clinical application is essential to a good practical nursing program. The student is prepared through this program for the licensure test to become an LPN.
Graduates completing the program are qualified to seek entry-level nursing positions in settings such as hospitals, nursing homes, clinics and other types of healthcare facilities. Duties will be varied depending on the employing agency, but may include taking vital signs, administering medications, collecting samples for lab tests, and providing any additional care that may be required.
One must complete 55 credit hours to complete this program.
