What is the difference between an RN and a BSN?

Choosing to pursue a career in the field of nursing is a solid decision with many career opportunities available. With the current career outlook, those who choose this path can be assured that there will be job openings and advancement opportunities for years to come. However, many prospective nursing students wonder whether they should pursue an RN or a BSN to maximize their advancement and earning potential. The differences between an RN diploma and a BSN degree may seem trivial to the patient, but for the nurse, a BSN can provide many opportunities for advancement and career growth.

Educational Differences

To most, the obvious difference between nurses with an RN and a BSN is the amount and intensity of the education they have completed. In order to become an RN, a student must complete and associate degree level program and then state certification requirements prior to working with patients. These courses can be completed at regular universities, community colleges, or at specialized nursing schools. The requirements to enter into these programs are usually a bit less selective, with students needing only a high school equivalency diploma and a minimum score on standardized testing.

Those attempting to graduate with a BSN will need to attend an accredited four-year college or university and complete all general courses for a bachelor's degree, as well as the specialized curriculum for the nursing track. Passing the nursing license exams through their state board of nursing is also required. Entry into these programs is a bit more difficult. Students must meet the acceptance requirements of the specific school, which may include a minimum grade point average at the high school or junior college level and higher scores on standardized testing, such as the SAT or ACT exams.

Job Description Differences

In an entry level position, the job description of an RN and a nurse who has completed a BSN program is quite similar. They perform the same tasks in patient care and are required to handle the same paperwork and administrative tasks.

The real difference in job description becomes apparent when it is time for advancement and promotion. Those with a simple RN have fewer opportunities to advance, beyond seniority levels on staff level. Those with a BSN have the training necessary to step into administrative and educational positions or even to continue their education and become a nurse practitioner, who can perform many of the same tasks as a medical doctor, as far as diagnosis and dispensing of medication.

Earnings Differences

When first entering the workforce, the earnings difference between an RN and a BSN may be minimal. In many positions, there is almost no difference in starting pay between the two degrees. Once practical experience is gained and a nurse is ready for advancement and promotion, a nurse with a BSN can receive substantial pay increases that an RN will not qualify for. Those who choose to progress their career and take on administrative duties or educational positions have the potential to earn more than $20,000 per year in excess of what those who simply remain in an RN position can earn.

Overall, those who choose to further their education and complete a BSN have many opportunities to advance and earn, over those with a standard RN diploma. While in the beginning of their career the differences may be minimal, as time goes on, the benefits of obtaining a higher degree will become apparent.
