Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing

Nurses receiving a baccalaureate level education are prepared to function in a general capacity as a practitioner, leader and scholar. Practicing nurses work with other health care professionals, such as doctors, and they serve as advocates and health teachers for their patients. Autonomously, the nurse carries out the process throughout the lives of their patients.

The foundation of baccalaureate nursing education is the study of general and cognate courses in the humanities and physical, biological and behavioral sciences. Nursing courses facilitate a student to acquire knowledge and skills and inculcate attitudes and values which are important to competently carry out nursing practice and pave the way for professional leadership. The undergraduate program, as well as the college, strives to create professional nurses, and to give them the necessary foundation they need in order to pursue graduate education.

Objectives of the BSN Program

  • Learn to utilize relevant theories from nursing and related natural and behavioral sciences as a foundation for planning holistic care to enhance, modify or support the health and well-being of client systems in various environmental contexts.
  • In the nursing field you will need to learn how to act in a multidisiplinary team with different contexts along with being able to show critical thinking skills.
  • The student will be able to use professional nursing practice communication skills as part of a multidisciplinary team in a multitude of different environmental contexts.
  • Perform competently in therapeutic nursing interventions.
  • Address the health patterns of patients with the use of the nursing system to give comprehensive care.
  • Client systems in health promotion, maintenance, restoration and palliation within a framework of community-focused professional practice should be educated.
  • Be sure to ask intelligent questions, as a student would, to manage your profession in practice.
  • Enhance the provision and management of holistic care through the application of professional roles.
  • Use professional standards of practice regarding legal, ethical and financial responsibility.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to continuing education.

Students who are working to achieve a bachelor of science in nursing degree will be required to take four years of full-time course work, which will be comprised of general education, as well as nursing clinicals and course work. When students complete their freshman year of pre-nursing, they will apply directly to the nursing major that will begin their sophomore year. Typically, there are fewer spaces available in the program than the number of student applications received making the application process a competitive one. Students looking to earn a bachelor of science in nursing degree will start their clinical and coursework during their sophomore year.
