Indiana Business College

The Veterinary Technology program at Indiana Business College aids you in developing the skills you need to establish a career you will love helping animals (and their humans). The curriculum covers all aspects of prevention measures and health care of animals including lab tests, radiology procedures and counseling for the care of sick animals. On-site kennels help students gain real life experience. The facilities and equipment that are provided for student use include a surgical prep area, radiology room, IDEXX blood work equipment and management software specifically for the practice of veterinary medicine.

Graduates are well trained to sit for the state board exam which is essential to become Registered Veterinary Technicians (RVT). RVTs are required to do clinical work under the supervision of a veterinarian and their job includes giving injections, taking x-rays, anesthetizing patients, offering post-operative care, cleaning teeth and much more.

Veterinary Technology (Completion time: 6 qtrs)

This program is designed to make the students ready for working as a Veterinary Technician. Under the watchful eye of a veterinarian, the technician will perform various clinical tasks in a private setting, including, but not limited to providing anesthesia to animals, taking their x-rays, providing care to the animals after surgery, giving shots to animals, and cleaning the animals' teeth. You will be studying every part of animal patient care such as: preventative measure, lab tests, radiology procedures, and counseling for the care of sick animals. Graduates from the program will be ready to take the State Board exam and become a Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT).

Knowledge, Skills and Tasks Required on the Job

  • Work under the direct supervision of a licensed Veterinarian, performing clinical work in a veterinary practice.
  • Complete tasks including physically examining patients, nursing care for sicks animals, performing diagnostic laboratory tests and imaging, nursing care for surgical patients, inpatient treatment and care, surgical assistant and anesthesia, routine dental cleanings and scaling, managing the office and educating clients.
  • Other duties may include getting animal patients ready for medical procedures and examinations, collecting, preparing and labeling laboratory samples, and cleaning and preparing examination and operating rooms, instruments and equipment.
  • You will also be required to be proficient in attentive listening, reading comprehension, writing, critical thinking, and customer and personal service skills.
