Veterinary Technology

Veterinary Technicians perform a wide variety of tasks, including administrative and clinical duties. Their patients also vary widely and can be anyone from a 10 gram Finch to a 200 pound giant breed dog. This can be the career path for you if you love animals. Both your patients and their owners will be counting on you to carry out your duties professionally.

The Veterinary world operates at a fast pace. This means veterinary technicians always need to be on their toes. Your daily assignments might consist of helping with surgeries, teaching clients about new pets, cleaning dogs, giving medicine to patients and helping a pet that was struck by a car all before lunchtime. Preparing our students for the exciting fast paced lives of veterinary technicians is what our Veterinary Technology program is designed to do. The Veterinary Technology course is concentrated to let you find employment soon and accomplish your goal.

A wide range of career options are available for graduates with a Veterinary Technology degree including:

  • Veterinary Office Supervisor
  • Animal Caretaker
  • Wildlife Animal Rehabilitation
  • Humane Society Worker
  • Pet Nutritionist
  • Pet Store Buyer/Manager
  • Research Assistant
  • Pet Product Sale Representative
  • Boarding/Breeding Kennel.

After successful completion of the necessary courses, students are given veterinary technology training at an externship site. Working in actual veterinary clinics provides the practical experience employers require.

A veterinary technology externship involves 300 hours performing all activities done in both the office and clinical settings. Students are provided with a placement, and their progress is tracked by the veterinary technician externship coordinator. Externship duties will differ from location to location and depending upon the interests of students. Typically students will work alongside the vet, assisting with routine exams and treatments, nursing and supportive care, and performing front office and laboratory procedures, as well as assisting with surgery, radiology and patient care.
